How to dissolve stress and anxiety inducing thoughts

Published by Ali Gordon-Creed on

The average human has between 60,000 and 80,000 thoughts each day and 95% of the thoughts you have in your head today are the same as the ones you had yesterday! Moreover, 80% of those thoughts will be negative. * This blog will explore how to dissolve stress and anxiety inducing thoughts.

This is where side effects such as stress, anxiety and poor sleep can come into play.

If you want to create a different future, you have to allow new thoughts but how do we do this?

Next I explore a few different ways to begin to literally change our physical brains.

How to change the way we think

The first step is to identify a negative thought that you are experiencing.

Think about what you say to yourself?

It could be “I’m not good enough,” or “I can’t do it,” or “I’m overweight.” Perhaps “I won’t fit in.”

Once you have identified this stress and anxiety inducing thought take a moment.

Pat yourself on the shoulder – it is a big first step to identify this thought.

Now that you have identified the thought, you can become aware of it and deal with it.

Write it down on a piece of paper and get curious. Ask yourself, “how does this serve me?” “What does this thought keep me from doing?” Write down the answers to these questions.

Next think of the exact opposite – for example if your thought is “I’m not good enough”, the opposite thought will be “I am good enough.” How does this now make you feel? What might this thought encourage and enable you to do. Again, write everything down.

For both the negative and positive thoughts, write ‘because’ after the thought and write down the why’s.

“I am not good enough because……”

“I am good enough because…..”

This exercise is not about judgement – just exploration.

Now commit to saying the positive thought over and over (in your head or out loud) whenever a situation occurs where the negative, stress inducing thought might prevail.

This behaviour change will help to break down the embedded negativity you have been experiencing. This is just one method of how to dissolve stress and anxiety inducing thoughts – I’d love to discuss more ways with you – find out more about our series of self development workshops – helping you to support yourself.

Thank you for reading, in my next blog I will be looking at how can we learn to be more coherent rather than chaotic.
